Dion Waiters isn’t against Kyrie Irving getting traded to the Miami Heat, but he wants to make one thing clear: he’s an alpha, too. Waiters gave a “Made in Philly” interview in a video that was posted on YouTube last week.
The question about Kyrie Irving comes at the 8:10 mark of the video. Waiters is asked about a potential trade, and Waiters makes it clear he’s open to it.
“It would help. I’m not against that,” Waiters said. “Just know there’s an alpha male over there too in myself.”
Waiters goes on to explain that it has nothing to do with a rivalry between him or “irrational confidence.” He just knows how he needs to live and act to be successful.
“I think that’s my biggest thing with everybody, ‘Oh he got irrational confidence…’ Man, I tell everybody, if I can make it from here, I can make it from anywhere. My mom got shot, my dad got shot. C’mon bro, there ain’t nothing that I haven’t seen. Why not? I need that confidence to get through. Every day I need that confidence to get by. It ain’t got nothin’ to do with ball. It’s who I am. It was instilled in me. But you know, there’s an alpha male over there already. If you come there, we can boogie together.”
Waiters signed a long-term deal with the Heat this summer, so expects to stay. And it sounds like he’s willing to work with Irving. Just don’t expect him to back down from his own image of himself.
