What happens when you finally get released from jail? One former prisoner explains

I had been eagerly waiting for my release day. From the day I was sent to prison, I was counting up the days I’d served until the half way point – then I started counting down the days left to go.

On my final day, at 7.34am, my cell door’s double bolts were unlatched and the door unlocked. I hauled my belongings, escorted by an officer, to the reception area ahead of my release.
