Former president Flt. Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings yesterday joined Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan to commission an artificial turf constructed for the Accra Academy School by the former student.
The former President supported the cutting of the tape to unveil the stadium and later performed a ceremonial kickoff for a match organized to outdoor the $200,000 fenced facility complete with floodlights.
In attendance were the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, students of Accra Academy (old and current) and various musicians.
Mr. Isaac Asiamah, representing the president, acknowledge Gyan’s dedication to the development of the country and called on other footballers to learn from the Black Stars forward.
The commissioning of the pitch which is christened Asamoah Gyan Sports Centre was marked with a football match between Team Gyan and the Professional Footballers.
The ceremonial game ended in a pulsating 1-1 draw.
The newly built Astro-turf boast of tartan tracks, dressing rooms and floodlights.
Asamoah Gyan also received a citation from his school.
