The 13th Doctor Who has been revealed after plenty of teasing and even more speculation. Is it Jodie Whittaker — the favorite according to many reports — or is it Kris Marshall?

It’s Jodie Whittaker! She will be the first female to take on the role, replacing Peter Capaldi after he leaves the show following this year’s Christmas special.

American audiences might be familiar with Whittaker from her work on Attack The Block alongside John Boyega and her appearance in the finale of the first series of Black Mirror, “The Entire History of You.” But she has been a fixture on British television for quite a bit at this point. Her big break came in the film Venus with Peter O’Toole, earning her critical praise and several nominations within the British film media, and more recently she appeared in Black Sea with Jude Law.

One of the reasons that Whittaker was a favorite to take the role of the 13th Doctor likely comes from her work on Broadchurch, created by new Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall. He will also be replacing a long time fixture of the series, taking over for Steven Moffat when the show returns in 2018.

The news was announced following the close of the Wimbledon final, following up on a week of speculation and giving fans something shocking to talk about for the rest of the summer. Plenty of people are sure to be pleased that the Doctor is now woman. Fire up that fan fiction.
