Delegation from the Tema Regional Police Command together in a meeting with the relations of the late Patrick Agbenyo and the MP
THE DEPUTY Minister for Transport, Daniel Nii Kwartie Titus-Glover has called on the Police Administration to as matter of urgency institute a full-scale investigation into the incident which led to a police officer shooting and killing a dock labour worker, Patrick Mensah Agbenyo in Tema Newtown.
According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema East Constituency, only true justice can calm the tempers of the angry youth and bereaved families.
The Deputy Transport Minister and MP of the area assured the bereaved family that he will follow the matter to its logical conclusion to ensure that justice is prevailed.
He called on the police administration through the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to support the family in organizing a befitting funeral and burial for the deceased.
The MP asked the youth of the area to exercise restraint for the police to investigate the matter for justice to be served.
For the past three days relatives of the late 30-year-old labourer at the Tema Harbour said they were living in a state of shock and sorrow while they continue to ponder over the reason their brother could be taken for an armed robber.
Mensah Agbenyo was shot and killed by a police patrol team on last Tuesday night. The police said it was in self-defense in their attempt to arrest the breadwinner.
The action by the police has triggered the anger of the family and the youth of the area who are challenging the explanation of the police.
This came to light when the MP for Tema East led the Tema Regional Police Command to commensurate with the bereaved family on Thursday.
Torgbui Datsomor II, the Chief of the Ewe Community in Tema Newtown on behalf of the family called on the police administration to grant them justice.
According to him stories as put out by the police in the public describing the deceased as criminal is not true. He stated that “Our late son was not an armed robber as put out by the police when the incident occurred. He closed from work and went to buy food when he had a misunderstanding with the four police officers who shot him.”
The family of the deceased indicated that they will be officially meeting with the police to consider the way forward.
