All government appointees should resign before we assume power – Sir John

Former general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwadwo Owusu -Afriyie (Sir John) has asked all public servants appointed by the outgoing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to quickly hand over their resignation letters before the NPP assumes power.

Sir John, who was speaking on Accra based United Television’s morning show said that the incoming NPP government does not want to hand letters to the appointees forcing them to go on leave, lest it gains the attention of the general public.

“All public officers, especially those appointed by the president, should immediately hand over their resignation letters” – he said.

“We would not hand over letters asking them to proceed of leave. They should know that their time in office is up. They should resign now” – he added.

The Greater Accra regional chairman of the NDC, who was also a panelist on the show, condemned the statement made by the former general secretary.

He said that the attitude of relieving government appointees of their positions will not end well for the country if it continues further.

He warned that sacking appointees without the necessary legal procedure will have serious implications for the country.

Chairman Ade Coker asked the NPP to learn from former president Mills, as he gave the appointees of former president Kufour time to leave office in order to avoid unnecessary legal battles.

On the issue of the attempted seizure of the Tema toll booth by suspected NPP sympathizers, Sir John asked all party sympathizers to exercise patience.

“We shall surely take control over the toll booths. Let’s exercise patience over that. We shall surely take control of them” – he said.
