Gunshots at Ekumfi-Esuehyia as NPP, NDC supporters clash

Three people have sustained gunshot wounds in Ekumfi-Esuehyia in the Central Region after supporters of incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the area and the MP-elect clash Sunday.

Police are yet to establish what may have sparked the violence but some residents say it was sparked by the refusal of Electoral Commission (EC) officials to heed to the demands by the defeated National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, Abeiku Crentsil, for a recount of the parliamentary polls.

Joy News Central Region Correspondent, Richard Kojo Nyarko reports tensions started building on Friday when supporters of the MP-elect, Ato Kudjo, went to the collation centre to block the incumbent MP’s supporters from obtaining a recount of the parliamentary votes.

On Saturday the tension came a head when an NDC pickup was set ablaze as supporters of the defeated MP made yet another attempt to get a recount of votes from EC officials at the collation centre.

On Sunday the two factions attacked each other again amidst gunshots.
Police will not say which group fired the gun but said three people sustained severe wounds and have been treated and discharged.

There is a heavy security presence in the Ekumfi-Esuehyia as a result of Sunday’s clash.
