Ga The Ga Traditional Council has denied stating categorically that the Yvonne Nelson led #dumsormuststop vigil caused last Wednesday’s fire and flood disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
The Council was on Thursday reported to have attributed the incident that claimed over 150 lives to the mammoth vigil led by some Ghanaian celebrities to protest the worsening power crisis in the country, stating it was in contravention of the ban at the time.
At a press conference on Thursday, President of the Council, Nii Dodoo Tackie cited a violation of the annual ban of drumming and noise making by the vigil as the main reason for the twin disasters.
He further mentioned the May 9 2001 stadium disaster as a consequence to the violation of the ban in that year.
That incident resulted in the loss of 129 soccer fans at the Accra Sports stadium during a match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
But a member of the Council, Numo Blafo in an interview on Kumasi-based Ultimate FM said the council only cited the tragic incidences as probable consequence of contravention of the age-old custom but “it wasn’t emphatic”.
Numo Blafo who also serves as the President of the GaDanmge Council of Wul3mei called on the public to desist from ridiculing the council, warning that there may be more disasters should there be future disregard for the ban.
