Transport Fares To Shoot Up Today

Trotro vehicle carThe Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Road Transport Coordinating Council have given indications of an upward adjustment of transport fares nationwide.

The decision follows a meeting with the Ministry of Transport and is expected to take effect on Friday June 19,2015.

According to the National Trustee of the GPRTU, MR. Ben Kwasi Ansah, all stakeholders in the transport sector had consented to the increment of 15%, explaining that it was as a result of the recent fuel price increment and the performance of the cedis against other major currencies.

“We took so many things into consideration, not only the fuel increase but you may recall that the last time we increased transport fares was last January and at that time the cedi to a dollar was two cedi to a dollar but now the cedi to a dollar is over four cedis.

“When the cedi is falling like this it affects everything including spare parts”.
