According to Pentagon, Abu Sayyaf was killed in a battle with the forces when they raided the Eastern Syrian town of al-Amr. His wife was captured.
He is said to have assisted direct Islamic State’s oil, gas and financial operations, as well as held a military role.
President Barack Obama authorized the operation which was carried out by forces based in Iraq.
None of the US troops involved in the operation were killed or injured, the White House said.
It said that Abu Sayyaf’s wife, Umm Sayyaf, is suspected of being an IS member and of being complicit in the enslavement of a Yazidi woman who was rescued in the raid.
