teenage murderersTwo teenagers have been arrested in connection with the murder of a commercial motorbike rider, whose body was found under a heap of sand on a construction site at Dome Sampaman, near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region.

Michael Mensah and Richard Akovor, both 18, are suspected to have snatched the motorbike of Mawutor Sapor, 23, after which they murdered him and buried his body in a heap of sand.

Sapor’s body was found on February 14, 2015, with multiple cuts on his head and other parts of his body, after some residents had traced blood stains on a street near the site.

The residents alerted the Amasaman Police leading to the exhumation of the body.

After about 20 days of hunting for the killers by the police, the Odorkor District Police Command had a tip-off that two men were selling a motorbike suspected to be that of Sapor.

The Odorkor District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Abraham Acquaye, said on March 4, a police operative feigned interest in the motorbike and the two men agreed to meet him with the motorbike under the Mallam Overpass in Accra.

“While they bargained the price, a police team laid ambush and arrested them after payment was made and the motorbike was handed over to the undercover police officer.”

After interrogating the suspects, the Amasaman District Police Command was contacted and it was confirmed that the incident took place in their jurisdiction, but the case has since been referred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Mr Acquaye said the family members of Sapor also identified the motorbike as that of their deceased relation.

We didn’t kill him

He said during preliminary investigations, the two suspects told the police that they snatched the motorbike from Sapor but had no hand in his death.

“They admitted robbing the motorbike rider with violence. They said they injured the rider in the process of struggling with him over the motorbike by slashing him with a knife but they did not know that he had died.”

Mr Acquaye said Mensah and Akovor have since been handed over to the Homicide Unit of the CID.

He said it was suspected that the two men might have committed robberies and other crimes “and anybody who might have fallen victim or have any information about them should make a report to the Odorkor or Amasaman Police or the Homicide unit.
