Today 28th February 2015, marks ten (10) years since, Ataa Ayi, described by the Police as the nation’s most wanted criminal, was arrested in what was said to be the Police’s most successful operations.
Then 32-years old, he was arrested in a house at Teshie in Accra as he was drying his clothes. The current Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye who was then Greater Accra Regional Commander (ACP Kofi Boakye) was directly involved in the arrest.
According to the Police Ataa Ayi was planning to travel to Germany before his arrest.
Ataa Ayi was known to be a ruthless armed robber who committed several atrocities, robbed and terrorized Ghanaians as well as foreigners in the country.
The Police said upon the arrested that “with the arrest of Ataa Ayi, a whole generation of armed robbers has been wiped off.”
Ataa Ayi was sentenced to 160-years in prison with hard labour on different charges of robbery and connivance for robbery. He is currently a church leader at the Ankaful Prisons in the Central Region.
