Ghana's Cultural Values Threatened By Lack of Support

Ghana cultureGhana’s cultural values are fast losing their place in society as a result of government’s continuous neglect of that area of national development.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Kekeli Concept Limited, Mr. Adelayitar Ricky the situation had adversly hindered the success of the country’s unique cultural practices.

In an exclusive interview on the subject in his capacity as the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Dance Group, Mr. Adelayitar noted that Ghana had a rich cultural heritage that supersedes many countries’ but is currently under-performing internationally because, much attention has not been directed towards the sector.

He explained that, although there are centers for national cultures across the ten regions of Ghana to promote culture, they have all become unproductive due to insufficient funds and premeditated policies.

He was optimistic that, if government assists the sector, it would be able to contribute meaningfully to the national purse and also win for the country the necessary recognition globally.

Mr. Adelayitar added that “Ghanaian dances in America is currently taught by whites who came to learn in the country”. This he noted is hampering the quality of our culture because they are not able to teach the true Ghanaian dances.

According to him, these whites even make it difficult for true Ghanaian performers to go and perform for the fear that they might take over the market.

He therefore appealed to government, corporate bodies and individuals to support the culture industry since it is an integral part of the nation’s origin.
