Over 900 security personnel including 400 police officers have been detailed to observe and ensure law and order at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium where the Kumasi Asante Kotoko will on Sunday play host to Accra Hearts of Oak in Ghana’s version of El-classico.
The much anticipated game is expected to attract over 20,000 spectators to the 43,000 capacity stadium, a number that is rarely seen in any other premier league game in the country.
According to police chief, a total of 955 officials including those from the Police, Military, Bureau of National Investigation (BNI), Electricity Company of Ghana , Ghana Water Company, Ghana Red Cross, Saint Johns Ambulance Service and the Ghana National Fire Service.
Ghana’s football history accounts show that games between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Heart of Oak has always in spite of the security threat they pose due to the large sports fans they attract to the stadium are extremely volatile as passions are easily stirred up mainly due to the long rivalry between the two sides.
Accra Hearts of Oak will on Sunday seek win the game to close the 11 points gap behind Asante Kotoko to 7 points while Asante Kotoko will hope to increase its point lead ahead ahead of Kpando Hearts of Lions to 10 points.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko leads the league standings with 54 points followed by Kpando Hearts of Lions with 47 points then Accra Hearts of Oak with 44points.
