A one-day ECOWAS meeting currently ongoing at the Flagstaff House in Accra has caused heavy traffic congestion in most parts of the capital.
The meeting between 8 heads of state in the sub region including Chairman of ECOWAS and President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama is to deliberate mainly on security in the ECOWAS region with focus on the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.
Major roads like that from the Kanda overpass to 37 has been blocked with heavy security presence.
The development has resulted in the thousands of motorists who ply the stretch taking to alternative routes which has adversely affected the free flow of traffic, leaving most part of the city in a bumper to bumper traffic situation.
According to a frustrated commuter, its been over 3 hours in traffic and yet the vehicle has moved a distance less than three kilometers.
The traffic situation in Accra on weekdays has been a source of worry for many commuters and city authorities who have tried unsuccessfully to resolve the problem. However, the blockade of some major streets due to the ongoing extraordinary ECOWAS meeting.
