Real Madrid has a record of the lifting the UEFA Champions League (UCL) title nine times, more than any European club. Five of nine were won consequently. The last time they lifted the trophy was during the 2001/2002 season when they had a 2-1 win over German side Bayern Leverkusen. Real Madrid have featured in 12 UCL finals with a record of only 3 losses.
Athletico Madrid, on the other hand, have no record of wining the UCL title. Athletico Madrid will be hoping to have their first ever Champions League title this year. They have succeeded in eliminating AC Milan and Barcelona out of the tournament.
Road to Final
Real Madrid were drawn in group B with FC København, Juventus and Galatasaray AŞ. They finished first with a maximum of 16 points. They were drawn with German side Schalke, for the last 16. Having won on a 9-2 aggregate, they were drawn with 2013 runners up Borussia Dortmund. Madrid proved unstoppable as they managed a 5-0 aggregate win. On the 11th of April, they were drawn to face the defending Champions Bayern Munichfor the Semi-final encounter. They secured a 1-0 home win against Munich for the first leg. Real Madrid managed to crush the German league title holders with a 4-0 win at the Allianz-Arena. Real Madrid has netted as many as 34 goals and considered 9 goals from the group stages until now.
In the case of Athletico Madrid, they were drawn in group G with FC Zenit, FC Porto and FK Austria Wien. Just like Real Madrid, they also, after playing 6 group games finished first with 16 points. For the last 16, they played Italian giant AC Milan. Securing a home and away win, they were later drawn to play Spanish side Barcelona for the quarter final. They secured a 2-1 aggregate win over Barcelona. For the Semi-finals, they played Chelsea and managed a 3-1 aggregate win over the English side. Athletico Madrid has scored a total of 25 goals and considered only 6 goals.
Saturday, 24th May is the day for the final showdown. Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Lisbon will be the venue and 20:45hours is the time.
