The Vice Chairman of the University of Ghana Basic School PTA, Rev. Acheampong Yiadom Boakye has called on parents to cultivate a proper family culture to promote an upright and moral upbringing of their children.
He said deliberately putting in place a domestic culture which the family lives by should include parents spending quality time with their children to better understand them and also be able to disabuse their minds of any negative thoughts or behaviours picked from outside the house.
Rev. Yiadom Boakye was speaking on Radio Univers’ Campus Exclusive on the backdrop of recent news reportage that captured many children in the Ejisu community of the Ashanti Region watching pornography and gambling late at night.
According to him, the advancements in society has adversely affected children by exposing them to many social vices of which parents may not be aware of saying technology has widened the gap between most parents and their children. He added that bringing up a child in uprightness in today’s society has become a major challenge for parents hence the need to be more vigilant and particular.
Rev. Yiadom Boakye further stated that it was important for parents to cultivate a distinct family culture that will be upheld by all so that “even if the children pick up negative behaviors from school or outside the home, it will serve as cleansing for them”.
“Parents have a major responsibility of training their children and so have no excuse if they fail”, “a good family culture will keep the children in check and ensure they grow up with principles and values relevant to their personal and social development.” he added.
