‘Red Issue’ and ‘United We Stand’, both prominent fan publications, have printed similar stories that the deal would see a move for Shaw completed before the World Cup. It is reported that Southampton are set to pocket £27m for their highly coveted teenage full-back and, despite his tender years, Shaw will earn £85,000-per-week from the move.
Both fanzines are known to have reliable Old Trafford sources and the stories back up early claims about the move made by the Sunday People last week, adding further credence to the proceedings.
Despite United’s interest and pursuit, it was initially thought the defender, who has supported Chelsea since childhood, would prefer a move to Stamford Bridge. Although José Mourinho was known to be an admirer and keen to find a long term replacement for Ashley Cole, it now seems United have done enough to persuade Shaw his future lies in Manchester instead.
Shaw represents one of the hottest English talents of the last decade and United’s potential capture of the player offers a statement of intent as the club looks to rebuild a squad capable of being the best in Europe once more.
