Judicial Court Declares UG SRC Election Null and Void; Election To Be Reran

UniversityThe recent Student Representative Council election of the University of Ghana has been declared null and void by the SRC judicial court.

In a unanimous 5-0 ruling on Thursday 10th April, 2014, the court declared the election which was conducted on Wednesday 26th illegal, ordering the Electoral Commission to re-run the election.

Two petitioners, Obeng Daniel and Davies Ohene-Fobih, both level 200 students and residents of Commonwealth Hall and Dr. Hilla-Liman Hall respectively on March 27th petitioned the Supreme Court of Justice of the SRC Judicial Committee, praying it to declare the elections held at the various halls of residence on campus null and void. They among others sought the declaration of SRC President elect Mr. Joshua Dogbe as void and with no effect with a perpetual restraining order on Mr. Jerry John Asiedu from holding himself out as legal adviser of the SRC. The two also sought an order from the court to rerun the elections, all of which were sustained and ruled in that direction by the court yesterday.

At the time of writing this story, the Electoral Commissioner was not readily available to comment on the development. 233 Live News has however gathered that incumbent SRC President Eric Edem Agbana has declared his intention to hand over power to Mr. Joshua Dogbe and his administration tomorrow in spite of the Supreme Court’s order.
