An officer at the Ga South Municipal office of the Ghana Education Service, Madam Joyce Osae Apenteng has stated that pupils in basic schools must not be allowed to use mobile phones in schools. According to her, mobile phones in spite of their advantages are a great source of distraction to children in school.
Mad. Osae Apenteng who has been particular about the education of students at the basic level further stated that the high tendency of some children watching inappropriate materials such as pornography while classes were ongoing made the use of mobile phone in schools a bane rather than an advantage.
You know children, we know of children who use this to view pornographic pictures and the rest which do not help them succeed in life. If they are looking at these things at this age, it takes their minds off their books and it takes a whole lot of their time and therefore it is not advisable especially those children from the primary school up to the JHS, it would not help them when they are in school
Speaking to 233 Live News, Madam Joyce Osae-Apenteng however noted that parents must seek the consent of a head teacher if they have genuine reasons why their wards should use a mobile phone in school.
The controversy of mobile phone use in schools has been an issue of gross interest to many parents and students in Ghana’s schools. Currently the Ghana Education Service has no clear policy on the use of mobile phones at the basic school level. At the high school level however, the service has long maintained a ban, which makes it a punishable offense to possess or use a mobile phone in the school.
