Free Access! Legon Opens Its Gates To 'Trotro' Drivers

IMG-20140317-WA0001The University of Ghana has with immediate effect opened its gates ‘freely’ to commercial vehicles popular called ‘trotro’.

The move, according to the head of campus security ACP Rtd. Amadu Salifu was the outcome of an emergency meeting with University management on Monday to find solutions to the chaotic scene caused at the GIMPA Link Gate by some concerned parents of the University of Ghana Basic School and students of the University of Ghana.

Commercial drivers are expected to pay GHS500 to acquire a special ‘UG Sticker’ which permits them to enter and exit the University freely. The cost hitherto was GHS150.

Having engaged management of the University in preliminary talks, commercial drivers are now allowed to ply the University roads, shuttling staff, students and other passengers between Achimota and Legon and also Dome and Legon.

In an interview with 233 Live News some commercial drivers they insisted the GHS500 sticker cost per annum was on the high and appealed to management of the University to consider selling at a reduced cost of GHS100 to them for the same period.

Director of Public Affairs of the University, Mad. Stella Amoah revealed in an interview with campus based FM station, Radio Univers that the University based on the preliminary talks with commercial drivers access will be granted to them as they commence and conclude the GHS500 payment.
