The Positive Education Coalition, a group comprising the University of Ghana SRC, the Convention People’s Party Youth League, the Pan African Improvement Organisation and other civil society groups and individuals is set to mount a book burning exercise as part events to press home its demands of the Ghana Education Service to strike out aspects of Ghana’s education syllabus that are ‘poisonous seeds of destruction’.
PEC’s book burning exercise which is slated for Monday, 24th February, 2014 and is expected to see scores of people gathered to impress upon the government through the Ghana Education Service to undertake the following:
1. The removal of all negative information about Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP from Junior High School Social Studies and Senior High School Government textbooks. This is undemocratic and causes an unlevel playing field because none of the other political party’s founder or party is depicted in this way.
2. The deletion from all JHS Social Studies and SHS Government textbooks any reference to colonialism or representative as Governors of colonialism as positive or beneficial to Ghana or Africa.
3. The inclusion of Ghana Autobiography of Kwame Nkrumah into the JHS syllabus and Africa Must Unite into the SHS syllabus as standard texts and primary source materials.
5. Prohibiting textbooks being sold in schools that denigrate Kwame Nkrumah and promote colonialism.
The exercise will be held near the SRC Union Building on the University of Ghana Legon Campus at 5.30pm.
