London: Woman and Child Hit and Killed By Train

Donna OettingerA woman and child have died after being hit by a train in south London.

The incident happened during the morning at Riddlesdown station, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

The woman has been identified as Donna Oettinger, 41, and her son as three-year-old Zachary. They were confirmed dead at the scene.

The station, which is in the London borough of Croydon, was closed earlier. Trains on the Oxted route are now running but with delays.

A BTP spokeswoman said: “The incident was reported to BTP at 8.29am and was also attended by Metropolitan Police officers.

“Medics from the London Ambulance Service also attended, but Donna and Zachary were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.”

Senior Investigating Officer Det Ch Insp Iain Miller said: “Our thoughts remain with Donna and Zachary’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.

“Officers are continuing to work to establish the full circumstances of what happened, although early indications show that no one else was believed to have been involved.

Riddlesdown is about two miles south of Purley.

There was considerable disruption to services run by the Southern train company, with buses running between some stations and extended journey times.

Power to the line between Woldingham and South Croydon was turned off.
