Nigeria: Fire Guts Independent Electoral Commision Building in Abuja

Inec-FireFire yesterday gutted part of the Nigerian Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) building in Abuja.
The premesis which happens to be the Headquarters according to eyewitnesses, the fire started at about 9.30am razing the office of the commission’s Director of Voter Registry.

The INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Mr Chidi Nwafor in an interview, said staff members attempted to put out the fire without success. He further explained that the Federal Fire Service and the National Emergency Agency (NEMA) were quite on time to save the situation.

According to Mr. Nwafor, preliminary investigation into the damage caused revealed only documents and voter registration equipment in the Voter Registry Director’s office were destroyed.

No casualty was recorded. Mr. Nwafor further added that registration data were however safe as they were not within the area the fire swept through. “There is no cause for alarm,” he said.

Thorough investigation has commenced to reveal the actual cause of the fire. It could be recollected that a similar incident occured months ago at the Electoral Institute, Abuja.
